PgMP and MSP: Which is better and why?

Who is Better PgMP Vs MSP
For a program management certification MSP v PgMP is an important question. They are supported by the latest thinking. Both of them can successfully run programs across all sectors and industry types.  It is not an either or choice as they are not duplicates but complementary.  They together represent the totality of global knowledge available to a program manager.

The Basics of PgMP and MSP

The Standard for Program Management is essential for Program Managers. The certification chosen is known as Program Management Professionals or PgMP. The theory sums up the knowledge that they should have and are able to evidence by documenting illustrative examples. The stories are gained through practical experience over several years and many hours of program management implementation.
On the other hand, the “Managing Successful Programs” guide provides a set of implementation guidance. They are based on a structured framework. It is primarily intended for those who are involved in the direction, management, support and delivery of the programs. This shall include program leaders, program sponsors, and program managers and so on.

Requirements for PgMP and MSP

The bar is set very high for PgMP certification. You need to have a 4 year bachelor’s degree. The minimum needed is four years or 6,000 hours of project management experience. Additionally, four years or 6,000 hours of program management experience is also needed. However, MSP has no experience requirements and you can compare it to learning to drive. In MSP you learn a skill and then take a test to certify your new ability. PgMP is more like becoming chartered in a profession where you practice for a number of years.
There is a huge difference and PgMP rarely features in job ads. If employers demand this certification they severely restrict their choice of candidates. While there is real value in both, one of these standards has 8 years seniority on the other and 100 times larger user base.

Why MSP is Better than PgMP?

MSP provides much more than the core requirement. It gives you examples to explain the theory described. It also suggests techniques and tools tailored for your program’s context. It had a longer to mature. The length and the depth of the material duly reflect this. There is no such manual which comes closer to providing support for implementation. The additional detail and concepts aid the development. The practical application built on solid theory.
The MSP exists to add value to organization and places this requirement at the centre of the program. It provides more guidance and support than PgMP. Training and certification is easily accessible to program teams. It facilitates faster adoption of a common standard. That is beneficial for the sponsoring of the organization.  For a rapid application of international program management standards, MSP is a better place to start.
PgMP has certified 1,100 people since 2007 and the MSP is certifying this number every month globally. Hence, the MSP is program management’s best kept secret. It is a clear global standard for managing multiple complex projects.
